I had the pleasure of watching the high school Variety Show this past month and was absolutely stunned by the talent we have residing in this district.  The show truly had a “variety” of acts in it, everything from classical pianists to a humorous skit about some of our teachers.  I thoroughly enjoyed all of the acts and would encourage you to attend the next one that rolls around in two years.  I also attended the Veterans Assembly put on by the seventh graders that morning in the middle school.  They had approximately 120 guests, many of whom stayed for the luncheon put on by the FCCLA and Mrs. Pohl.  The assembly was very impressive and well received by the veterans who were being honored.  This is just one fine example of a project based learning success we have been seeing throughout the district.  I also attended the celebration of life for Del Doolittle on Sunday and enjoyed the many stories of his dedication to Gilbert.  It was one of those weekends to truly celebrate some of the things that make Gilbert a great place.

I attended the FFA Chili Supper this past Sunday.  I always enjoy getting to see the awards being presented and to appreciate just how many students actively participate in this organization.  I think the guiding principles of the FFA and the things it teaches students are needed now more than ever.  Our organization is being led by Jon Davis and Melissa Appel, who work hard to keep this organization operating at such a high level.

If you are looking for something to do during these winter months, we have many athletic competitions underway right now with boys and girls basketball, wrestling, and cheerleading.  Soon we will have speech contests coming up and your support of those students would also be welcomed.  We are hoping for great seasons for all of these activities.

Speaking of winter activities, it is time once again for me to remind everyone about the possibility of inclement weather and school cancellations.  To listen for any announcements about the weather we have a variety a ways to keep you informed: announcements on KCCI, WHO, and WOI TV, alerts from the Gilbert district on your phone or email, and websites notices.  If you are not receiving notices by phone and would like to, please contact my office and we will set that up for you!
